Subject: Installing slave driveOS: Win98 SECPU/Ram: not sureModel/Manufacturer: Compaq |
Comment: I just picked up an old Compaq to use for music. The hard drive appears to only have @ gigs. It was apparently used for a business. I have second Compaq that has some problem, Win98 also. Can I use that hard drive for a slave drive. If i can, do I need to erase what is on it or leave it on. Is there any guide to help me do this. I have checked some guides online, some are simple, some more difficult. I don't want to screw up a second computer. Thanks

Reply: (edit)Check that the jumpers are correct and then just hook it up. You may need to go into cmos/bios setup (F10) to verify the drive is seen OK. You don't need to erase it, although if it has stuff on it you don't need you might as well as that will free up drive space. The computer will boot from the drive that's set active by fdisk. In your case both your original and the slave will be active. When that happens the computer will boot from the active drive on the primary master connection. So as long as you have the new drive as slave your computer will continue to boot from your original drive.

Reply: (edit)Note that you will not be able to run most of the programs that are on the slave drive. They will have to be reinstalled because the new system doesn't have registry entries for them.
