Subject: can't download IE6OS: 98CPU/Ram: 633 MHz Intel CeleroModel/Manufacturer: HP Pavilion |
Comment: I ran the recovery disc formating the hard drive. Now I can't seem to download IE6(it is now IE4) or other things and I can't get the windows update in the start menu to work either. The bar at the bottom almost completes.(the sight won't connect completly). Also I constantly get an error message that says there is an error running the script. I have to click the x in the box at the upper right hand corner to continue. Clicking the yes or no doesn't do anything though it used to.

Reply: (edit)"I ran the recovery disc formating the hard drive" My 1st thought is what was wrong that prompted you to wipe the drive & reinstall 98? You did wipe it, right? Some people use the term "formatting" incorrectly.

Reply: (edit)google "Download IE6 SP1". several possible solutions other than Micro$oft. There is nothing to learn from someone who already agrees with you.

Reply: (edit)You are most likely getting the errors and uncompleted sites because IE4 can't display some of the content in todays modern web sites. Compaq Presario 5365 AMD K6-2 450 Mhz 128 MB RAM SimpyMEPIS 3.4

Reply: (edit)After running the format hard drive(recovery disc) and downloading the Opera browser the computer worked but he says that he can't delete internet explorer otherwise he has to do it all over again. Now he can download things successfully and see videos. I gave him this web site to bookmark and contact so you might be hearing from him. Thanks alot for your help

Reply: (edit)"rhodeye" Useful to remember... Even with the best of intentions in mind - and obviously you have a wish to help your chum... It's not really good form or wise to post an email address (yours or anyone else's) on an open site... One is very likely to get heavily spammed etc... If one must post an address maybe wise to create one specifically for that occasion/event, and then dump (abandon) it once it has served its purpose; e.g Hotmail, Yahoo, GMail etc...? Most freebie accounts expire if not used within a defined time period...? And echoing (not so) Dumbob... IE6 can be downloaded as a complete package for installation from several sites on the www...

Reply: (edit)Thanks. I edited my reply to remove the email address. I haven't talked to him yet today to see if he tried to download IE6 Do you think it can be done from the IE 4 that he has. I know before I ran the recovery disc I was using IE6 so I suppose it should be possible.

Reply: (edit)IE6 can be found on many Office, Norton, AOL or other CDs, you probably already have it. The current WinUP site will not work with IE4 nor the Windows Scripting Host package from a Basic Windows 98 reinstall, but installing IE 5.50 SP2 or IE 6.00 SP1 solves both problems at the same time.
