OS: 98
CPU/Ram: 633 MHz Intel Celero
Model/Manufacturer: Emachine
Comment:

When I reformated using the Emachine 98 recover disc the computer wouldn't recognize the ethernet floppy card (though it did when I didn't do the total reformat). I was wondering if I could use an ME recovery disc. I kind of doubt it especially since the disc is from anHP computer. I would just like your opinion on it. I'm afraid I might not be able to get 98 back even if I use the 98 recovery disc.

Are you talking about the Ethernet Card or the Floppy drive?

If it's just the Ethernet (network) card, all you'd need to do is install the drivers.

A recovery CD from one brand of computer won't work in another, and I'm sure it wouldn't
meet the MS EULA.

Download and install SIW.exe to tell you what network card you have installed. Then Google for drivers for that card. Download and install those drivers. Find SIW at the link below. Download the standalone file.

I'm using my HP computer to ask this question. How could I download that sight on the Emachine since I can't get online? Is there a way to transfer it from this computer to the other one? Thanks

Remove the Added hardware (ethernet floppy card), perform the reinstall of Win 98 then add the Card back in and install drivers.

Use of the ME disk from HP will get you no where. totally different Hardware.

The eMachine disk recoginized the Ethernet because it was already installed and you did not perform a clean install.

There is nothing to learn from someone who already agrees with you.

"...I was wondering if I could use an ME recovery disc..."

... depends if the recovery program seeks and stops the recovery as its a different machine.

... I've used ME ghost image restores on different pc's many a time, as it recognised hardware it would install the drivers which are built-in to ME.

... I would not recommend that method; but it would work. A clean install of ME (YES)

... ME is so very versatile.

... End User License Agreement (EULA)
if that ME is'nt on another machine. Why not?

... I reckon there's going to be a few EULA nags from the old timers.

... if a man called Gates sells windows there must be LoL

... ok ya!

rhodeye, do you have a thumb drive, cd burner or external USB drive? If so, save the file to that media then just copy it to the 98 machine.

We removed the ethernet card and reinstalled it. When we tried to use the recovery CD (for the emachine since we are using the emachine) it wouldn't work. It would always try to find the bootlog from the floppy drive. I can't run my recovery disc now. I succeeded in reformating it twice than once without reformating it using the restore disc all three times. Then we removed and replaced the ethernet card as mentioned above. Since then I've had the problem mentioned above. How do you get into the BIOS to change the boot sequence? Do you think that would enable me to run the recovery disc again when needed in the future? Thanks

Why did you run the Recovery CD in the first place, let alone so many times?

Perhaps you can start at the beginning. What is the state of the system now? Does it have a functioning Windows OS installed?

Yes it has an operating 98 OS. The reason I ran recovery was I wanted to start from scratch. When I ran it months ago without reformating it because of frequent freezing it recognized the ethernet floppy disc. It was when I ran it the next time formating the hard disc that it stopped recognizing the ethernet floppy. Now whenever I boot it I get a black page with white letters for a little while then I get a box saying it recognizes new hardware, the ethernet floppy I suppose and gives instructions for searching for its driver. It does this even if I don't have the floppy in its drive and even if I have the recovery CD in the CD drive. I followed the instructions but none of them works. With the floppy in drive A (the floppy drive) it said it could not find the needed info on that drive. When I cancel the attempts to install the driver I get the desktop which functions but I can't connect to the server, internet, etc. Also, whether or not this has anything to do with it, my friend was playing around with network connections which I am unable to disable.

You keep saying Ethernet Floppy. Do you mean you have the Ethernet (Network) card drivers on a floppy disk? The new hardware detected message is normal since 98 uses P&P. You just need to find the proper drivers for the network card.

As OTH said, download and run SIW and see what the exact NIC (Network Interface Card) is that you have. Then, go to that manufacturer's website and download the drivers. If the file(s) fit on a floppy disk, great. If not, burn them to a CD, then what I would do is turn off the machine and turn it back on. When the new hardware message comes up, select the option to specify the location for the drivers. Then select floppy or CD, whichever one you've used.
