I am in a dilemma.

I feel stupid for asking this.

I installed Apache 2.2.8 on my Windows 98SE machine. It is supposed to start by opening in the console window or by using the Monitoring service in the system tray. The monitoring service icon says that the server is not running. When I click the monitor service, there is no instance of Apache listed and the "Start" option is greyed out.

When I select Start > Programs > Apache 2.2.8 > Control Apache > Start From Console the console window pops up yet the icon in the system tray still says it's not running.

I cannot type any commands in the console window. I have no idea what to do. Please can someone help me?

Did you see this by any chance: http://httpd.apache.org/docs/2.2/pl...

If you scroll all the way to the bottom, it details how to run as a console application, and also what to do if it doesn't work. Read that, try it out, and if you still have problems, post the log and any error mentions here.

PS: I don't know if the "monitoring service icon" will change when you run Apache as a console application. I think that icon only reports the status of the service, which is unavailable on Windows 98. As for not being able to type in the command window, you shouldn't be able to. it should just sit there. Try opening up a browser and see if http:/127.0.0.1/ displays anything.

I actually did read through that...but I was getting so confused by instruction that say 'run the following command' with commands like "httpd.exe -k start" because I have no idea what that means or how to do it *blush*

Do I just open the Run box in Windows Start menu? MS-DOS prompt from Start > Programs? I don't understand.

For instance there is a direction in that documentation that says:

"You can install Apache as a Windows NT service as follows from the command prompt at the Apache bin subdirectory:

httpd.exe -k install"

I don't understand what it means by "from the command prompt at the Apache bin subdirectory". How does one enter these commands?

"You can also run Apache via the shortcut Start Apache in Console placed to Start Menu --> Programs --> Apache HTTP Server 2.0.xx --> Control Apache Server during the installation. This will open a console window and start Apache inside it. If you don't have Apache installed as a service, the window will remain visible until you stop Apache by pressing Control-C in the console window where Apache is running in."

httpd.exe is the name of the Apache application.

httpd runs the application.

httpd.exe -k install will run the application with the parameters -k and install. Install will install the necessary service.

httpd.exe -k start will start the service.

Apache will run as a service from Windows 98 but the service needs to be started from the console. It cant be started during boot as it does in Windows NT/2000/XP

If it still fails check the error log which will tell you why it failed.

Bear in mind that Apache is essentially a Windows NT application although it will run under windows 98 but not as well. There are some things you cant do in Windows 98. For instance you cant start and stop a service in Windows 98 without re-booting as you can with Windows NT.
