The UNIX man for "BUGS" section on gnutar command describes: "The -C feature does not work like historical gnutar programs, and is probably untrustworthy."

Im using the extension -C to un-tar my tar file at dir1 into the folder dir2 via the command below.

gnutar -xvf home/dir1/file.tar -C home/dir1/dir2

It seems to work fine for me but the MAN describtion of -C got me worried. Does it mean its not reliable to use -C? Any safer way to perform the same? Pls help - thanks.
