Subject: Sun Solaris 8 Install from a CD
Comment:

Hi - I'm pretty new to sun machines and I was given A Sun SparcStation 5 for my birthday from my uncle who used the box as an auto-dialer for his company. Unfortunately, the password to the root login is unknown, but I did buy Sun Solaris 8 and just got a 411 Bootable CD-ROM drive. When I start up the computer, and press Stop + A - i then type boot cdrom, and it resets but gives me an error message. The only other thing - I have never used a tray-loading CD-ROM before and i might be putting it in wrong, but I have tried it facing both ways. Also and finally - i have never used SCSI either and do I need a terminiator on my 411 Drive?
thanks so much

Is the SCSI ID set to #6 on the CDROM? As for the tray, the cd should be face up so you can read the label and the metal part goes inside first.

if it is a new cdrom, you must do a boot -r to reconfigure the devices. it probably doesn't understand that you put a cdrom in there.

if you don't have the root passwd, then after oyu get the cdrom working put the OS disk in the drive, and type

boot cdrom -s

this will drop you to root

to change root type

passwd root

Done
