Subject: Slow response of Telnet and FTP OS: Solaris 8 CPU/Ram: Ultra 1 128Mb
|
Comment: I have a Sunfire 280, E-250 and an Ultra 1 all running Solaris 8. I have noticed that FTP and telnet access from WinXp is very slow to initiate. When I make the connection it takes up to 30 seconds after I connect to get a prompt. Once I get the prompt everything seems to be fine. Does anyone have any idea why this may be happening? I am very new to Solaris/Unix so any help would be appreciated.

Reply: (edit)Are your telnet and ftp services running through tcpwrappers or something else that needs to confirm an inbound IP number before acting?

Reply: (edit)No I am not using any tcpwrappers or any other service that verifys IP address. I am very new to unix so all I really did was add a few lines to the pam file for telnet as referenced in the answer book. I have noticed that this only appears to be an issue with WinXP, I can telnet and FTP from another sun box without any issues. Is there maybe something additional that I need to setup for telnet and ftp to function properly.

Reply: (edit)Typically this comes from name resolution issues. Try using just the IP address if you're using a host name. If it's quicker then you probably are having a name resolution issue.

Reply: (edit)I figured out the problem last night. It appears that the solaris box is doing a reverse lookup on the connecting device. Since I do not have access to the DNS server right now, It had to wait for the reverse lookup to time out. I put an entry in the hosts file and that resolved the issue. Thanks to all for the help
