Subject: NIC problems in Solaris 8 Intel |
Comment: Hi, I have several nics rtl8139a, rtl8029, lne100tx version4.1, and dfe-530tx. Have not been able to get any of these cards to work. I have a 100Mbit/full duplex network and want to run 100Mbit nic card. I went out and bought the lne100tx nic because it was in the HCL but it still doesn't work.. All the other nics in the HCL card to hard to locate. Plus I don't have an ISA slot to use. I have found drivers for the rtl8139 card but there are for SCO5 or Unixware but haven't figured out how to install them. Any hell would be great. Aaron

Reply: (edit)what have you done to try to make these work? Solaris doesn't go looking for new hardware unless you tell it to. # touch /.reconfigure # reboot allow secondary boot to search, make sure it can see the nic. from there you might find it easiest to vanilla it with a sys-unconfig (read the man pages FIRST) to define the boxes IP address, hostname, etc. that's the closest to hell I let out. I usually get flamed enough trying to help.

Reply: (edit)This is a theme I've been experiencing with Solaris 8 and NIC's. I've tried the SMC 1211TX and the Linksys LNE100TX. Neither work. I have see web sites with the Netgear and Dlink cards failing also. In fact I can't seem to find any of the cards on the HCL that you can buy locally to work. This smells like a rat to me. Download free OS, try but it doesn't fuc(*)&* work with any basic hardware. What gives here.

Reply: (edit)Two of my old 3Com Fast EtherLink XL 10/100Mb TX Ethernet PCI NIC (3C905B-TX) work fine on my Solaris 7 and 8 machines, but they are hell to expensive. Wasted so much time on efforts to make others newer ones working, and in result only spent more time and some $$ on returns and re-stocking.

Reply: (edit)Hi ~ Where is the driver for 3C905B-TX card under Solaris8 (IA)? 3Com drivers don't seem to be useful at all, other sites have me confused. If you got yours working, I'd love some details... Thanks - Seldom1757
