Hi,

SUB: GRUB not booting SOLARIS 10

I want to multi boot Windows 2000 Pro, Solaris 10 and Suse Linux 9.3 Pro in my computer.

I installed Windows first by creating a partition for it. Later I created another partition for Solaris and installed Solaris 10 there.

I left some space for Linux and installed Linux last. While installing Linux, I chose GRUB as the boot loader (or boot manager). Linux automatically detected Suse Linux installed (or about to be installed) and the Windows file system. Although it sees Solaris partition, I did not see that in the list of OS under 'Available Sections', but Windows and Linux were there.

So I added an entry for Solaris 10 in there along with Suse Linux, WIndows and Suse Linux fail safe. In 'Available Sections' section I chose :

Label: SOlaris10
Type: Other
Image/Device: (hd0,1) (/dev/hda2)
chainloader : chainloader +1

I cloned the entry for Windows when i created the entry for Solaris. Windows had (hd0,0) (/dev/hda1) chainloader +1. (What is a chainloader? Can I have +1 for Solaris too?)

I also chose to Replace the code in MBR ('Replace /dev/hda with Generic code'), activated the boot loader partition ('Yes, activate /dev/hda3'). For the last value in the list (I forgot the name of the entry) the option read NIL when I continued with the install.

Linux installation went through fine. When I tried booting the system with GRUB, Linux and Windows start fine. But Solaris does not start. I get:

--------------
root (hd0,1)
Filesystem type unknown, partition type 0xbf
chainloader +1
---------------

and Solaris does not boot.

Can you please tell me what the error is and how to fix it.

Is it possible to multi boot SOlaris10, Windows and Linux with LILO or GRUB?

Thanks,
Ram.

Grub is trying to read the filesystem on your Solaris partition. To prevent this, use "rootnoverify" instead of "root" for the Solaris entry in your GRUB config file (/boot/grub/menu.lst).
