Comment: I have a SparcStation 2 that I salvaged and will not boot from the internal HD right now. I am trying to install solaris 7 from CD. I have an external NEC multispin 4 on SCSI ID 6, and I know it reads the drive when I try and boot from it because the LCD displays it. But, when I type: boot cdrom b cdrom or b /sbus/esp/sd@6,0:c it comes back with this error: Bad magic number in disk label Can't open Sun disk label package Can't open boot device any ideas? i am new to installing any OS on a Sun box, and will take any suggestion or advice. Thanks in advance!

Reply: (edit)bad magic number usually means that the CD-rom is not Sun compatable. Try a plextor or toshiba. Also some drives have a 512/2048 jumper change the setting on it.

Reply: (edit)also depending on what is wrong with your boot harddrive, you might have to unplug it .. I had a drive that died and couldn't get the cd rom to boot until I disconnected the failed drive... I guess it was screwing up the bus some how.... FWIW ~voigt
