Subject: mssearchnet.exe deletion
OS: XP Home SP2
CPU/Ram: 512k RAM, P4 processor
Comment:

My home PC has been infected by a virus (sorry I don't have the name to hand) that NAV could not remove. In looking at the virus definition on the Symantec site is said something about the virus placing mssearchnet.exe in C\windows\system32 - SO I DELETED IT! That was clearly a mistake and has caused all sorts of issues:

* I cannot search in windows explorer
* I cannot launch IE or Mozilla
* My NAV has gone haywire.

Being a computing novice (clearly), I have no idea what to do.

Also, as I have XP home, I do not have the OS dics (thanks Microsoft), and can't get to the internet to download anything that way.

Any suggestions?

At this stage I am not that fussy about cleaning the virus (it was only a minor irritation anyway) - I need to fix the fact that I no longer have a mssearchnet.exe

Thanks,
Geoff

You have deleted the file, but there might be more malicious files in your system, as the mssearchnet.exe executable is related to several dangerous threats like SpywareStrike or SpyAxe. Please check removal instructions for these parasites (follow the links) to make sure you don't have any malicious objects remaining in your system. Those can cause the described problems.

I did try this but for some reason I have no restore points to choose from. I have used System Restore effectively in the past but this time it will not allow me to go back to Restore Points before Jan 06.

Would this be connected to the fact that I had System Restore turned off for some reason - i.e. when I turned it back on it deletes any previous Restore Points and starts again from scratch?

The only problem here is that Spywarestrike and SpyAxe require an internet connection to be able to purchase the removal capability (Spywarestrike found all the virus files but doesn't let you delete them unless you register - which I can't do as part of the symptoms I am experiencing is IE and Mozilla will not load.

Any other thoughts?

Please post a Hijack This log so that the files associated with the virus/spyware/hijacker can be identified. You can download Hijack This at this link http://www.tomcoyote.org/hjt/ then place it into a folder of it's on, such as C:\HJT, so that back up copies can be made and not clutter your desktop or other folders and the backup copies of deleted items can be easily located if needed.

Once saved double click HijackThis.exe, and press "Scan". When the scan is finished, the "Scan" button will change into a "Save Log" button.
Press that, save the log, Ctrl-A to Select All, and copy its contents into the text editor at this forum.

Do not fix anything yet unless you know what you are doing. This is a powerful tool that can crash the computer if used improperly.

Download smitremfix from this link
http://noahdfear.geekstogo.com/ to your desktop.Open the file and it will extract itself to a new folder called SmitRem.(don't run it yet)

Download Adaware SE from this link http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware/ ,update it but (don't run it yet).

Download Ewido Security Suite then set it up this way Ewido Setup Instructions reboot into Safe Mode

Now open the SmitRem folder. Find the RunThis.bat and click it. Make sure all other open windows and programs are closed. If you haven't done this, then the program will remind you.Follow the onscreen direction and let smitremfix run, then disk clean will run(take a few minutes.

Run Ewido When the scan has completed, Ewido will create a report.txt file. Click the "Save Report" button on the bottom of the screen and save the log to your desktop in case you need it later.

Run Adaware SE

Reboot into normal mode and post a new HT log

You only had part of an HT log posted, because you have an older version of HT. GO to the link in response five and download the newer version after running smitrem.

You should also go to start>control panel>add/remove programs and uninstall Spyware Detector. It is a rogue tool that may try to get you to purchase a product to remove the spyware.

jabuck, many thanks for your excellent help. I have now followed your instructions to the letter and here is the HT log (including removing spyware detector - although it said "some elements could not be removed. These should be removed manually - but didn't say what elements).

Your fix has made a significant improvement as I now have internet access restored. I still have a rogue alert in my system tray telling me that "windows has found 1 update" and encouraging me to install it.

I also get a rogue dialogue box when my desktop boots up saying "SPG Alert! - SPG detected attempt to alter internal structures and/or failed consistency check. You are advised to check your computer for virus infections, trojans or malicious software..... Do you wish to run SPG?"

Download ccleaner to clean out all your temp files. Make sure there is not anything in the recycle bin that you need as ccleaner will delete recycle bin items unless checked not to do so.Wait and run it in safe mode

Temporarily disable real time protection for the spyware tools you have as described at this link.http://wiki.castlecops.com/Securing_Your_Computer:_Temporarily_Disable_Real_Time_Monitoring_Programs

Run Ht again, close all browsers and windows except HT, place a check to the left of the following items and press "fix checked":

Next go to Start > Control Panel > click Display > Desktop > Customize Desktop > Web > and remove everything except"my current home page".

Reboot into safe mode and run ccleaner and Ewido. When the Ewido scan has completed, Ewido will create a report.txt file. Click the "Save Report" button on the bottom of the screen and save the log to your desktop in case you need it later.

Please reboot into normal mode and post the ewido log and a new HT log.

Go to Control Panel > Internet Options. On the General tab under "Temporary Internet Files" Click "Delete Files". Put a check by "Delete Offline Content" and click ok. Click on the Programs tab then click the "Reset Web Settings" button. Click Apply then ok.

Sorry for the delay in responding jabuck - I've been away.

I have now follwed your latest instructions and posted the HT log below (ewido found nothing).

I still have the rogue icon in my tray asking me to install updates, and when windows starts I get an error message saying that it can't find \...se.dll

Apart from that, all seems well.

Well it is eveident now what some of the problem is, About:blank known as coolweb search.

Once you get About:Buster downloaded go You will need to turn off real time protection for any anti-spyware programs that you have as directed at this link http://wiki.castlecops.com/Securing_Your_Computer:_Temporarily_Disable_Real_Time_Monitoring_Programs after you have downloaded About:Buster

Please download About:Buster 6.0 from this link http://www.malwarebytes.org/AboutBuster.zip

Unzip the contents of AboutBuster.zip and an AboutBuster directory will be created.
Navigate to the AboutBuster directory and double-click on AboutBuster.exe.
Click "OK" at the prompt with instructions.
Click "Update" and then "Check For Update" to begin the update process.
If any updates exist please download them by clicking "Download Update".

Reboot into safe mode

Browse to where you saved AboutBuster and run AboutBuster.exe.
Click OK at the directions prompt.
Click Start.
Click Yes to allow it to shutdown explorer.exe.
It will begin to scan your computer for malicious files. If it asks if you would like to do a second pass, allow it to do so.
When it has finished, click Save Log. Make sure you save it as I need a copy of it.
Run AboutBuster one more time.

Reinable your real time protection.

jabuck, I have now tried your latest suggestion and it successfully removed the error message on windows startup saying that it can't find \...se.dll. I do still however have the rogue icon in my tray asking me to install updates - which is a minor irritation I guess.

Not sure if these are of interest now, but here are the SPSeHjFix and HT logs.

jabuck, the symbol is a small yellow shield with an "!" exclamation mark in the centre. On loading it pops up a bubble saying "Updates are ready for your computer. Click here to install the updates". If you then click on the bubble another generic window opens titled "Automatic Updates" and then asks "How do you want to install updates?" "Windows found 1 update. This update requires that you first accept an End User License Agreement". Then you are offered the choice of "Express Install (Recommended) - The easy way to install updates that are applicable to your computer. This will ensure that your computer is up to date with the latest software" or "Customer Install (Advanced) - Note: you may need to restart your computer for the updates to take effect" and at the bottom of this window are bottons for "install" or "cancel".

And that's it.

It's clearly trying to look official (Microsoft) but tells you nothing about what it is planning to install - hence my suspicion.

Any ideas?

Thanks for looking.

Microsoft updates does have a yellow shield with a exclamation mark.If an update install was ever delayed the yellow shield would remain in systray.Try turning off automatic updates to see if the shield goes away, if so it is most likely a valid update.

1. Click start >run, type sysdm.cpl, and then press enter.
2. Click the Automatic Updates tab, and then click to select turn off automatic updates.
3. Click ok.

If that turns it off, turn it back on and install the update.

I have the same problem and I guarantee its not the windows update install icon

Been reading the discussion with great interest although I do not have the courage to download and install all things suggested here. Installing things got me into trouble to start with, if you get my drifting ;-)

The symbol is connected with two icons on desctop. One leading to
http://testsecurityonline.com/
the other to
http://securitylist.net/
and thats probably where the real virus / hijacker is at.

Smitrem should remove spystrike, however after reviewing the post I left out one thing that may contribute to the bogus icon in the systray:

Next go to Start > Control Panel > click Display > Desktop > Customize Desktop > Web > Uncheck "Security Info" if present.

But as stated if,turning off auto update removed the icon it could be a valid update.

Success!!!
Reboot in safe mode was key! (use f8)

Then search and delete everything that includes the word/key/data using both windows explorer and regedit
nvctrl.exe
mssearchnet.exe
ncompat.tlb
mscornet.exe
netwrap.dll
wiatwain.dll
with one exception - registry entry explorer run pops up, change back to original values = kernel32 data string C:\WINDOWS\system32\kernel32.dll and wininet.dll data string wininet.dll (do modify instead of delete when you find mssearchnet.exe here)

Now you're probably home safe but you can also remove all hpwhatever.tmp files you find.

Read more use google with searchstring
Remove SpywareStrike

Good luck

How funny! I turned off automatic updates and the icon went away and returned immediately (after a brief search) when I turned auto updates back on again. I decided to install it and hope for the best.

Turns out to have been a legit Microsoft XP service pack update - at least that's what it told me - and since installing it everything is behaving normally.

Thanks again jabuck. You've been a great help. Fingers crossed I won't need to add to this post again.

Cheers,
Geoff

Hi there, I think have almost the same virus as Geoff S had. I allowed winlogon.exe to access the net (wonder why...=/ ), and then it took about 5 sec befor an icon looking like windows update (it's actually blinking between that and a red circle with an X in the middle.) appeared, and it says that I have a dangerous infection on my system. And suddenly it had installed SpyAxe and Spyware strike. And I found mssearchnet.exe and I bet there is more too. I have run SmiteRem.exe, but when I first ran it, I wasnt in safe mode (but I have since run it in safe mode too!). I have also run adaware and ewidos.I have also run ccleaner. They no longer find any malicious files. But I still have the icon and the warning that my system is infected, and it asks me to click on the bubble with the text to automatically download antimalware protection.

I seem to have gotten a new variation of this really hard to fix adware/malware
it deleted all the restore points
it has files mssearchnet.exe that will not delete also has a file nvctl.exe will not let me delete it either it has changed the browser to about blank and has made changes to the registry system that I cannot fix yet it seems to have done a minifile dump and disabled the microsoft spyware program it also will not stay quarantined with the McAfee antivirus program and it also will not delete it. Luckly, it does not seem to infect windows xp pro or xp pro 64 that I have on my other computers in the same network only the xp home version was infected. Any feed back would be appreciated I would really rather beat this one rather than re-formating the hard drive and writing it to zeros to wipe it clean and reload the system from scratch also copying and pasting into a clipboard note pad would not allow me to view the source code it was blocked from view access illegal action locked up computer any help would be appreciated
