Subject: Can't search from my Address Bar?
OS: Windows XP
CPU/Ram: Intel Pentium M 1.3GHz an
Comment:

I am having a problem where I can no longer search from my address bar in IE6. I now have to go to my MSN search bar. How can I regain this capability? I had spyware on my computer, and have downloaded many programs to help clean up my computer. Two of the programs are Spybot -S&D, and Ad-aware. I am attaching a log from the HijackThis program. Can anyone please look at this and advise? Can anyone help, this has been frustrating?
I also changed the search setting in
Tools -> Internet Options -> Search: this did not work!
Thanks for any words of wisdom.

I'm not surprised this was left alone; at first and second glance it looked relatively clean. more on this below.....

Close all browser windows and have HijackThis fix these items.

Then follow this entire procedure to remove the remnants of a peper infection.
(minor issue-spybot or adaware may have already removed one of the peper files normally used in the procedure. Nevrmind, there is a follow up procedure to check whether all the infection files have been deleted.)
Please follow these steps, in exactly that order:
Run this uninstaller:
http://home01.wxs.nl/~kleyn080/uninst.exe
When done, use the following tool to delete the files themselves:
Download Drpepertobackup.exe, save to disk, and doubleclick the file; it will self extract to c:\.
http://www.mjc1.com/files/mo/drpepertobackup.exe
Find the "C:\drpeper\Find backup and Delete Peper files.vbs" file and double click it.

A box will appear, copy and paste: HotEld.exe and hit ok.
A second box will appear, hit ok. [*Report in on the notification you receive here and whether the process continues. This is where the missing file usually goes.]
It will find all the files, delete them and will make backups in the same folder.
It'll open a text file (Peper.txt) with the list of all files deleted.
Reboot
Copy and paste the files found in peper.txt, with a new HJT log.
>>>>More info on your problem:
http://www.mjc1.com/files/peperpage/
*Note: you may have rebooted since and generated a new set of random name peper files.
Pls be prepared to run this procedure a second time.
Also, thanks for your patience…….

Iceblue - Your'e RED HOT!

I tried your suggestions and they worked! I would have never figured that out on my own.

When I downloaded the "drpepertobackup.exe" file, the program itself listed two options (one of the two was the C:\drpeper\Find backup and Delete Peper files.vbs) - I chose both and then clicked on START and the extraction happened immediately. At this point the problem was cleared up.

I was able to follow your instructions, when I performed a search and listed "peper" - here is where I found the listed file, and then was able to place in "HotEld.exe". This is where the WINDOWS SCRIPT HOST appears and states that "these files have been deleted" and creates the Peper.txt file.

Here is your requested information and I hope it helps other users, with the same problem. These three files were deleted...

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\HotEld.exe
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\Ufq1.exe
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\VmvDwc.exe

That log looks pretty good to me!
Glad it helped you out on this;
other users will have a different set of randomly generated filenames to remove;
these ones won't work for them unfortunately, so thats another complete process for them.

I have the same problem as Tom. I used Ad-aware to clean up spyware and that's about when I noticed I couldn't search from the address bar; if I type a random search term, IE6 tries to open a website by that name (http:///?%20searchterm) and, of course, brings up the "The Page Cannot be Displayed" error page.
Any advice?
