Hi, I have been wanting to use Linux for a fair while now but never had a second PC good enough to do the job (Dont want to use my main rig). Finally I've got one that should run OK but I'm not 100% sure which distro I should use.

So far I have only used Knoppix and Damn Small Linux live CDs and both are fine. I think I might just go Ubuntu, but I really have no clue.

The PC I'll run it on will have these Spec's:
1.1Ghz Coppermine Celeron
512MB PC133
8Mb i740 AGP graphics card (old, I know)
80Gb WD 7200RPM HDD
ISA Soundblaster 16 (Works fine in Knoppix)

It will be mostly used for MP3's, internet, web radio etc. It would be nice to have a good looking GUI too. Thanks for any suggestions.

Mattwizz3 :

Vista Home Basic
2.2GHz Sempron
1GB DDR400
GeForce 6800Ultra

At this moment having tried various Distro's have come down to PuppyLinux and PCLinuxOS, the second being easier for a Windows Migrator, and would run fine on your specs.....

I suggest you try this http://wubi-installer.org/

Basically, you install ubuntu through windows. Ubuntu will appear in the windows boot ini file.

It means you can uninstall ubuntu from windows if you want to.

Before posting try google. Backup. Use anti virus software.

Coming from Windows, I suggest either SimplyMEPIS or PCLinuxOS.

Another possibilty is SAM Linux (based on PCLOS) or you might wanna have a look at DreamLinux:

EDIT: didn't realize that this is an old post...lol

I would recommend Ubuntu Feisty. I am running Feisty on a machine with similar specs with Beryl and it runs fine.
Ubuntu looks kind of ugly when you first install it but it can be easily made top notch in the looks department.
Its very easy to install and has one of the best support forums around.
You cant go wrong with Ubuntu.
