I have an old pc that i wanted to convert to a linux server however, i can't seem to get anything to boot from the cd rom. I have even gone so far as to pick up a new cdrom in the event that the old one was pooched.

It seems that the bios is set correctly to boot from cd then hd.

The hd is a western digital IDE drive and was formatted to fat32. There is no os on that drive nor has there been.

Im wondering what is causing this error. The system will not even allow knoppix or ubuntu live cds to load and run. this seems a bit perplexing to say the least. I can only presume that the old bios has something to do with it perhaps. additionally i have tried to install windows much the same way without any luck (via cd).

Any suggestions for this situation would be greatly appreciated..

Linux noob...

El Torito (booting from CD) likely may not be supported on your machine's BIOS. You'll need to find a distro with a boot floppy to install (which Knoppix or Ubuntu) may or may not have (Puppy and DSL do...)
