Subject: Zip Drive Installation?OS: WinXp ProCPU/Ram: Model/Manufacturer: |
Comment: Was considering installing a Zip Drive as I have another bay open next to my 3.5" floppy drive, are there any differences installing a Zip Drive as opposed to installing another 3.5" floppy drive, do they use the same cables, connections, etc? Also, I presume that I need to change the Boot Order Options in the Bios Setup Utility, or will the OS autimatically configure it? Thank you.

Reply: (edit)zip drives i have seen use the same 39/40 pin connector as the ide hard drive and ide cd drive. you only need to change the boot order if you want to boot from it - does anyone boot from zip drives? I thought zip drives had become redundant due to cd writers

Reply: (edit)Some bios's will boot to zip if on a hard drive, IDE cable, maybe usb zip if ever made, some are scsi. Unless you need access to the zip disks there is almost no practical use for this anymore. "Best Practices", Event viewer, host file, perfmon, are in my top 10

Reply: (edit)As already mentioned, there were SCSI zip drives. If it is SCSI it'll have a wider data connection--50 pin I think--versus 40 for the IDE zip. I think it'd be a good idea to have one. As removable media they're easier to deal with than a cd/rw drive. And if you've got the space you might as well use it. New disks are going to be pretty expensive but you can get used ones on ebay for next to nothing. Disks originally used with Mac's can always be reformatted for PC's.
