Does anyone have a clue why public pcs are causing my usb flash drives to start failing ?

its happened twice now ,and I have never had this problem before.
When I went to plug it in to a pc, a message came up ,mass storage device is now installed, but when I went to click it , its volume name was gone ,and a message saying "this device is not formatted, do you want to?" and all my data was gone.

Has anyone else had these problems and is it a virus that causes this to happen ?
Also I have not tried formatting it yet because the public pc will not allow any formatting. I have had this problem on a previuos occasion only a fortnight ago ,and
my home pc even would not let me format that
usb flash either, and saying the partition was gone.
Is there any program that can recover the lost data ?
