I need help. My integrated soundcard isn't working [ADI 1885].
Background: I was running out of space on my 20GB Maxtor drive and I decided to get my dad's used 40GB Seagate drive. I hooked it up but the Maxtor had somehow failed on me. No problem... other than my files being totally lost. But the Seagate had XP Pro on it and I cleaned it out [it was awfully slow]. I installed the NVidia drivers for my video card and that went by smoothly but I noticed there was absolutely no soundcard installed.

Please help.

"I hooked it up but the Maxtor had somehow failed on me"

Did you make sure to check the jumper settings & change them as needed?

"the Seagate had XP Pro on it and I cleaned it out [it was awfully slow]"

What do you mean "cleaned it out"? Format & reinstall?

"I noticed there was absolutely no soundcard installed"

You need to install the motherboard chipset drivers & the sound drivers.

With the Maxtor, I tried every jumper setting there was, made sure all cables were set in all the way but still no luck. But I really don't need that hard drive anymore. In the BIOS, the HDD showed up as 'MAXTOR RIGEL'. I googled this and it came up with data restoring sites and other sites saying that it was hard drive failure.

For the Seagate, all I did was login on my dad's account and deleted all of the junk that was unneeded and now it runs *almost* new... But still slow. I didn't format or reinstall.

Oh, and I also just installed the chipset software and the audio software. The chipset worked fine, but after the audio was installing a pop-up came up saying something along the lines of, "Driver not found. Reboot your computer and reinstall software." So I rebooted and tried again and same thing.

If installing a second drive on a single IDE cable MAY be necessary to change the jumper setting on the original drive, as well as the new drive. Try removing the sound device from within Device manager. Reboot and try again. If the driver wasn't found you may not have actually installed the sound drivers.
