doing a swap over of my motherboard and pretty much all of it was straight forward. the only real problem ive incurred is as follows;

the bay that comes from the PCB behind the power switch (denoted as M/B SW, HDD LED, and PLED) was originally set out as a row of 9 with only 6 of them being used.

on the new one, its set out as a 5 and a 4. ive broken up the connector side (quite successfully), into 2's for obvious reasons. i have worked out what i thnk should be by cross referencing which pins were used and which werent (which identified where the PLED "should" go) and identified which pins had been WHAT I ASSUME TO BE earthed. i say this because in the bay of 9, there are 3 pins that have a track coming off and going to what looks like a ground point.

this helped me sort out what went where, which is all good, until i see the PCB has a description below which isnt very clear. this is how the pins look as i see them;

. . . . x

. . . . .

underneath this, the description looks as such;

PLED PWR SW
[ ]
HHDLED RESET

(the square brackets frame the whole thing, not as the reformatted screen look that you will see).

now, im going to assume that the PBC isnt lying

however, i dont know how to link them up now. does this mean anything to anyone because its not clear to me.

any help would be very much appreciated.

Do you have your motherboard manual? It will clearly describe the pinout for the front connectors. The only ones that matter as far as polarity is concerned are the LED pins. The PWR and Reset switches are only momentary contacts and it doesn't matter which wire connects to which pin

hi, thanks for the quick response. unfortunately i dont have a manual. polarity inst too much of a big issue for me as generally speaking they run with a rule that the darker wire is positive, so ive been told. my issue is i have no indication which of the pins to use (9 pins, only 6 wires), and whether to mount them all horizontally, or some vertically etc etc

If you know your motherboard model, Id say you have a 95% chance of finding the manual online.

Its unlikely we will be able to help, almost every motherboard has different setups for the front panel connection.

Not sure, If you have a AGP or PCI-E video card make sure its seated properly. If you have integrated graphics maby its something else. Its easy to bump something while working inside a PC, make sure the ram, hard drive cables, power plugs and even the CPU are all in tightly.

Some more info on the system would help.
