I have a new to me IBM NetVista 6824MBW. I had to remove the processor to install a second HD from my old computer. I can't get it back in. The ZIF lever is not accessable because the Pentium is mounted to the heat sink permanently, or so it appears. Is it possible to force the processor into the socket with the lever down and locked? The socket has mPGA478B on it. Thanks for your help.

Why did you have to remove the processor to install a new hard drive? How did you remove the processor without releasing the lever on the ZIF socket? The heat sink is normally mounted to the processor and you have to install the processor first and then install the heatsink.

On small cases, the drive bay interferes (sp?)with the heatsink. Usually you can take the drive above it out and then install them in reverse order as opposed to removing the HS/processor combo.

No, it is not possbile to "force it" nor would I recommend trying. How did you get it off to begin with if you can't access the ZIF lever?

Remove the heatsink and then install the processor.

I have serviced many P4's that the heat sink welds itself to the processor. If you do not try twisting the heat sink before removing it the processor can be pulled out without releasing the ZIF lever. Users when working with tech support have done this and I end up having to carefully wedge the processor away from the heat sink. Carefully check the pins and see if any are damaged before trying to reinstall it. If you are lucky no permanent damage has been done.

I have ordered replacements where the user attempted to reinstall the CPU without releasing the lever and ruined many of the pins. Once you damage them there is not much hope of fixing them. CPU's are not cheap and warranties usually do not cover this type of damage.
