Reply: (edit)FOUND A SOLUTION 1st remove the PCI simple communication controller from the the Device Manager if it is still showing, then do a scan for new hardware, when prompted to install choose to install a specific device and not automatically choose the conexant drivers, instead click on show all devices, click on Generic and install the Fujitsu LW RWmodem v.90 56K J device, it works and there is no modem sound can be disabled correctly. Hoorah, been trying to get a solution for a few dozen hours

Reply: (edit)For anyone in need of a XP driver for a conexant softK56 PCI modem, all you have to do is use the generic XP driver for the Aztech conexant driver. For you people who don’t know what a generic driver is, (you are a fool) It’s the build drivers in the database that comes with windows itself. To install the driver do the following 1 Open control panel 2 Click add new hardware 3 untick ‘search for diver’ and tick I’ll select (or something like that) 3 go to the Aztech section (It’s in alphabetical order) IE it’s up the top 4 Click next or whatever you have to click 5 I’m sure you can work out the rest

Reply: (edit)I assisted a friend of mine in loading winxp on a systemax pc and this computer continually persisted in locking up. I finally, after three attempts was succesful in putting xp on this computer. During setup it stated that there was going to be a compatability issue with this conexant modem. I proceeded knowing that I could just uninstall the drivers and reload. That was a misconception and I am hopeful that somebody else has ran into this problem that might know what the fix is. This systemax pc has a generic modem with a conexant chipset. When windows xp recognizes it, it says it is a conxexant soft 56 pci modem. I have utilized the hsf driver file that conexant has on their website and also have utilized the fujitsu fix that was described on this board. The fujitsu fix did not work but the hsf driver did. After loading I performed the query modem function in the modem diagnostics and everything appeared to be functioning. Then I utilized hyper terminal to make sure the modem would be able to connect to another modem and talk. This also worked. Now when signing on to MSN it states that modem is not functioning. So I performed the internet connection wizard and it states no modem present. I looked at what port that the modem was present on and it showed port 3. I am assuming here that the internet connection wizard is looking for a modem on port one. Is there anyone out there who is running into this problem that knows the fix.

Reply: (edit)I found the fix to this mystery. If you read my previous email submitted prior to this one you know what trouble that I was having. Well I restored the computer back to WIN ME and verified that the previous modem worked. which of course it did. I Then loaded the following driver: www.aopen.com/tech/download/modem/fm56-slm.htm (ensure that you get the aopen fm56-slm driver). Made sure that the new driver was displayed in device manager, vice the previous generic soft 56 pci. The old driver will say something like generic 56 pci or soft 56 pci. ENSURE IT SAYS AOPEN 56 PCI after you load the driver. Now I preceeded with the WIN XP upgrade and everything works as it should. I would recommend though if XP does not recognize your nic or modem card, that you do not install xp until you get the current driver installed. With this I actually loaded the ME driver and this was recognized during the XP upgrade. I hope this helps all that find this useful. This was three days of brainstorming and I couldnt have done it without a webpage like this.

Reply: (edit)Hi there! This may sound like a very easy thing but I am having the following problem: All of a sudden my computer does not recognize my modem. According to the message it does not find any modem althoug it is installed (Error 630:...) I have tried to remove it and install it again (the only choice I get from the modem installation wizard is com1)but once I tried to find out if it is working it says it can not open the port. Does anybody know why? Hope somebody has an answer to this question Osman

Reply: (edit)Here is the site. Be very careful in choosing the correct modem. Use the picture as an aid, and the subset numbers are the numbers from the face of the Rockwell chip on the modem (example R6793-12). http://www.macsysco.com/product/prointroduce/modem/internal/softmodem.htm
