Comment:

The sound on my computer fails at random, with no speaker icon in the tray, and alert sounds being provided by the system speaker. This problem can be traced to my SigmaTel High Definition Audio Codec in Device Manager, which displays an exclamation mark. The problem can be fixed by uninstalling the device then reinstalling it, or simply by deactivating the device then reactivating it. The problem recurs, however. Please help. [N.B. Under ‘Device Status’ there is the message ‘This device cannot start. (Code 10)’.]
