Comment:

I recently installed DOS 6.22 on my computer. Everything went smoothly, and I got a message saying that DOS was successfully installed on my computer. I then inserted my WIN98 boot disk which contains smartdrv.exe into the floppy. I tried to run smartdrv.exe from the A:/ prompt, but I get a message saying that smartdrv requires DOS 4 or higher to run....but I just installed DOS 6.22!!! I DO have DOS 4 or higher on my computer, so why isn't smartdrv detecting that I have the proper version of DOS installed????? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you very much.

You should probably use the 6.22 smartdrv.

There must be something else going on - the smartdrv from 98 is compatible with 622 - - I suppose the burning question might be "why?" since the correct version is normally installed to the hard drive

"I recently installed DOS 6.22 on my computer."

Not, I hope, the one listed in your specs(?)

It's not needed - Win98 smartdrv runs without issue on 622 (maybe try it and see for yourself?)

You could try entering the command "setver | more" and see if, for some weird reason, smartdrv is being informed it is running on an older version of DOS (this is very unlikely, as you said you just installed MS-DOS 6.22)
By the way, what are the advantages of running Windows 98's smartdrv instead of MS-DOS' one?

... none that I'm aware of - and certainly none by loading it from a floppy disk.

Seems like we're only getting half the story, and another one abandoned (to be filed under wţf)

Ok, I think the setver is probably the way to go, but I have a few questions. How do I add setver.exe to the config.sys file when there is no operating system on the computer (I am trying to load smartdrv right after doing a format so that I can do a clean install of XP). And after I add setver to the config.sys file, how do I execute the program exactly....should it look like this when I type it in....
A:/setver smartdrv.exe 6.22

If that is wrong, how exactly would I type it in, and does it get typed at an A: prompt or a C: prompt?

I really appreciate all the help and the patience with my ignorance :).

"Ok, I think the setver is probably the way to go"

Why? It's not required - I checked

"I am trying to load smartdrv right after doing a format so that I can do a clean install of XP"

That's insane - 622 is limited to FAT16, 2Gb partitions, practically the size of an XP install

Just use a "DOS7.1" (Win98) bootdisk, problem solved - you can have smartdrv run from that

Clean install of XP

If you remain curious about 'setver' use the tried and true method of obtaining information:

setver /?

As well, the 622 'Help' program is invaluable (although dated) and can be found on Win9x installation CDs, also from that M$ page

"How do I add setver.exe to the config.sys file when there is no operating system on the computer "

?? You configure everything on the boot floppy via its autoexec.bat & config.sys - it's a self contained OS

... but I'm tellin' ya - not the way to go, given your stated purpose

The more I read & think about this one, the more astounded I become - - you couldn't make something harder if you tried!

"I just installed DOS 6.22"

Then you already have the DOS622 version of smartdrv there, and presumably the hard drive is bootable (so why the Win98 floppy?) - - still, if your intention is to install XP, there is no real need to have an OS on there at all, merely have the drive partitioned and formatted under DOS - preferably as FAT32, since the 2Gb FAT16 partition would be very... confining for XP. But that would be only if you needed to install 'flat' (from the hard drive)

Is there a compelling reason for you not to use the XP CD to install from? That (normal) method is 'DOS free' - you don't even have to format or partition, the disc "does it all"

IF you can, please send me a sample of whatever drugs you are on - they must be hellaciously powerful
